Symon Looks to ‘Final Mile’ Network Innovation

Symon Gray has been appointed Head of Networks at one of Britain’s fastest-growing independent distribution network operators (IDNO).

Symon moves into the new role at Energy Assets Networks (EAN) having served as Compliance and Standards Manager, and will be responsible for day-to-day operations, overseeing the design, adoption and management of ‘final mile’ residential and industrial and commercial electricity networks.

EAN has grown rapidly since its launch in 2018, increasing connections to around 1,000 per month and building a strong pipeline of contracts through an expanding customer base. The company has won a 5% market share of new build residential connections, gained a reputation for flexibility in adopting commercial assets…and is now poised for significant growth in EV charging infrastructure.

“This has been anything but a normal year, but we are now seeing adoptions accelerating to near pre-COVID levels, which is a very encouraging indicator for the future,” said Symon. “What’s also becoming clear is that final mile networks have a key role to play in enabling a low carbon future.”

Network capacity is predicted to come under pressure as electrification increases in every area of life on the road to Net Zero, notably through the adoption of electric vehicles and the transition from natural gas to electric heating.

“Without innovation from IDNOs or expensive network reinforcement, the demands placed on local networks by EV charging and heat pumps could lead to power outages,” said Symon. “At EAN, we have taken the initiative and are involved in a number of innovative projects focused on smart load management solutions, including using artificial intelligence to maintain network integrity by closely controlling and sharing available ‘bandwidth’.”

The company is also an active partner in the commercial EV charging sector, working with a number of high-profile operators to adopt the infrastructure that will support the wider uptake of electric vehicles.
